چکیده
The concept of Genealogical Sorting Indexes (GSIs) was first introduced by Cummings et al. [1]. Given a set of observations belonging to different groups (represented in the form of a hierarchial tree), the Genealogical Sorting Index (GSI) value obtained for a particular group provides a quantitative measure of how closely the observations belonging to this group have clustered in the given tree. The GSI value ranges between the values of 0 and 1, where in a group obtains a GSI value of 1, if all the members of the group can be distinctly represented as a separate homogenous sub-clade of the tree (having no members belonging to any of the other groups). As the observations (belonging to a particular group) spread out, the GSI values for such groups fall below one.

The genealogical sorting index: software and web site for quantifying the exclusivity of lineages
Background: We introduce the software that calculates a new statistic that we call the genealogical sorting index, or gsi. This statistic quantifies the common ancestry of groups of individuals on a phylogenetic tree. The significance of an observed genealogical sorting index value is measured with permutation testing. Results: The algorithm for calculating the genealogical sorting index was wr...
متن کاملSorting improves word-aligned bitmap indexes
Bitmap indexes must be compressed to reduce input/output costs and minimize CPU usage. To accelerate logical operations (AND, OR, XOR) over bitmaps, we use techniques based on run-length encoding (RLE), such as Word-Aligned Hybrid (WAH) compression. These techniques are sensitive to the order of the rows: a simple lexicographical sort can divide the index size by 9 and make indexes several time...
متن کاملReordering Columns for Smaller Indexes
Column-oriented indexes—such as projection or bitmap indexes—are compressed by run-length encoding to reduce storage and increase speed. Sorting the tables improves compression. On realistic data sets, permuting the columns in the right order before sorting can reduce the number of runs by a factor of two or more. For many cases, we prove that the number of runs in table columns is minimized if...
متن کاملSharp Phylogeographic Breaks and Patterns of Genealogical Concordance in the Brine Shrimp Artemia franciscana
Genealogical concordance is a critical overlay of all phylogenetic analyses, irrespective of taxonomic level. To assess such patterns of congruence we have compiled and derived sequence data for two mitochondrial (16S rRNA, COI) and two nuclear (ITS1, p26) markers in 14 American populations of the hypersaline branchiopod Artemia franciscana. Cladistic analysis revealed three reciprocally monoph...
متن کاملSpatial but not temporal co-divergence of a virus and its mammalian host.
Co-divergence between host and parasites suggests that evolutionary processes act across similar spatial and temporal scales. Although there has been considerable work on the extent and correlates of co-divergence of RNA viruses and their mammalian hosts, relatively little is known about the extent to which virus evolution is determined by the phylogeographic history of host species. To test hy...
